History for the Well-Educated Heart

The primary focus for this age is to use teaching methods that will educate the heart.   A hundred years ago, educators rightly understood that hearts must be warmed before minds can be taught. The gift of story, art, and music are the primary tools of a heart-based education.  Our top choice resource that can be used to guide parents and teachers through this type of education is The Well-Educated Heart - A Story Study Guide, by Marlene Peterson.

This study guide is designed to be used each year from ages 4-12.  Several resources are listed under monthly themes.  Parents and teachers choose which resources they want to use each month that are age appropriate for their children.  Resources are marked with symbols to make is easy to find selections suitable for children under 8 years old.  Monthly themes are based on stories of American History which link to other stories that have transpired all over the world.

The Well-Educated Heart Story Guide includes resources for learning about literature, history, art and music during "structured school time" as well other times throughout the week in the form of movies to watch and books for independent reading.

Select resources from the guide for children 8 and under. This guide will be used for all children 4-12 so there will be ample opportunity to use the other resources as children grow older.

This story guide is available as a free .pdf download and will guide families through the Forgotten Classics Family Library which is available at Libraries of Hope.

The Freedom Series from Libraries of Hope is the foundation text for the Well-Educated Heart Story Guide
